For more race level performance and long-term shapeholding, North Marathon and Performance Series 480 sails feature carbon fiber reinforced Spectra or Dyneema laminates. When high loads are applied over long time periods Spectra/Dyneema fibers will begin to elongate, and sailshape suffers to a degree. By laminating super low stretch carbon fiber with Spectra/Dyneema laminates, superb stretch resistance is combined with outstanding strength and toughness. Despite less than ideal resistance to flex fatigue and rough treatment, the carbon fiber in a 480 sail will likely face far less abuse, allowing the substantial performance and shapeholding benefit of carbon fiber to shine.
